Clean Energy Ambitions: Assessing Ashok Leyland’s RE100 Strategy for Africa, South Sudan, and the UK A few months back, executive directors at the World Bank Board gave a positive nod to the ASCENT-Sudan project (Accelerating Sustainable and Clean Energy and Digital Access Transformation). The goal is to facilitate easy digital access and expand clean energy to parts of Sudan that are in urgent need of long-term recovery and development. This initiative feels impactful enough to convince Ashok Leyland, whose presence in Africa is well-known, to undertake something similar and support its goal of RE100. The Dheeraj Hinduja-led Indian automotive giant has vowed to source all of its energy requirements through renewable energy by 2030. If strategically envisioned, Ashok Leyland’s efforts can bring a similar impact in African countries like South Sudan, Ethiopia, Sudan, and many more that lack clean energy. ASCENT-Sudan is a great initiative that can establish the foundation for the private sector’s involvement in offering clean energy and catering to the technological needs of some of the world’s neediest countries.
