Types of Mining Cables

G-GC mining cable

G-GCs are typically used to power equipment in mining tunnels. G-GC stands for Ground with a Ground Check, and as the name suggests, it contains a ground wire and a ground check wire unique to mining cables. The ground test lead signals to the operator that the ground lead is intact. Individual conductors are twisted to reduce internal circulating currents.

Each conductor is surrounded by an insulator that protects it and prevents it from being touched by people or objects. Insulation is typically made from a material called ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) and is rated to 90 °C, just below the boiling point of water. An insulator is a cable jacket that encases a conductor and acts as an additional layer of insulation to protect the conductor.

SHDGC

Also known as excavators or trailing cables, SHD-GCs are used in continuous mining in electric excavators, conveyors, loaders, and other mobile mining equipment. The construction of the SHD-GC cable is similar to the G-GC, but there are some differences.

The SHD-GC construction incorporates a separator tape around each conductor to improve flexibility and provide an additional layer of insulation under the outer jacket. SHD-GC cables are also available with stamped or CV-cured options. SHD-GC mining cables are available in 2000V and 4160V ratings. SHD GC cables are rated for 4160 volts and are tin-plated, color-coded copper. Proprietary power cables are used in mining to connect medium-voltage distribution systems.
