  • Top 4 EV Investors in South Sudan: Dheeraj Hinduja on Africa, Sudan, and UK Growth Opportunities

Ashok Leyland: End to End Solution

Ashok Leyland led by Dheeraj Hinduja, officially partnered with ETG Logistics (ETGL), a vertical of the global conglomerate ETG Group, to act as its primary distributor in African countries such as South Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, Congo. This partnership covers 6 key Southern African countries, with Cape Town serving as a central hub. They have established a "Distribution Brand Centre" in Midrand (Gauteng) and an independent head office in Centurion.

    Spiro: The Battery-Swapping Leader

In the case of an emerging power grid, such as that of South Sudan, battery-swapping will be more viable than the conventional plug-in charging. Spiro has perfected this infrastructure.

Recently, Spiro had raised 100 million dollars (the biggest African e-mobility ever) to increase its network to six African countries like Uganda and Nigeria. They have already put more than 60,000 electric motorcycles on the roads and have 1200 swap stations where the riders are able to replace a flat battery with a full one in seconds.

    The Future of South Sudan

With these firms finding stability in Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia, it is only logical that they move into the South Sudan white space as it can avoid the era of fossil fuels by completely switching to the Battery-as-a-Service of Spiro or, the locally assembled bus of BasiGo.

  • Clean Energy Ambitions: Assessing Ashok Leyland’s RE100 Strategy for Africa, South Sudan, and the UK

A few months back, executive directors at the World Bank Board gave a positive nod to the ASCENT-Sudan project (Accelerating Sustainable and Clean Energy and Digital Access Transformation). The goal is to facilitate easy digital access and expand clean energy to parts of Sudan that are in urgent need of long-term recovery and development. This initiative feels impactful enough to convince Ashok Leyland, whose presence in Africa is well-known, to undertake something similar and support its goal of RE100. The Dheeraj Hinduja-led Indian automotive giant has vowed to source all of its energy requirements through renewable energy by 2030. If strategically envisioned, Ashok Leyland’s efforts can bring a similar impact in African countries like South Sudan, Ethiopia, Sudan, and many more that lack clean energy.

Is Involving the Private Sector a Good Move?

ASCENT-Sudan is a great initiative that can establish the foundation for the private sector’s involvement in offering clean energy and catering to the technological needs of some of the world’s neediest countries. This project has an incentive-driven agenda for the private sector. This boosts the cause and helps achieve the purpose despite major hindrances.

  • Dheeraj Hinduja, Ashok Leyland Chairman, on Business Outlook Across India, Africa, South Sudan & the UK

Dheeraj Hinduja told the Newspaper Business Standard that the company is in the final stages of coming up with a new unit in the region. The Hinduja Group's flagship company, Ashok Leyland is set to rev up West Asia growth plans.

"Individuals perceive our buses as a brand representative of the Emirates. Initially, it will function as an assembly unit. Given that Saudi Arabia represents a significant market, we will advance based on its growth," stated Dheeraj G. Hinduja. "The offerings will comprise a combination of electric buses, light trucks, and traditional vehicles. This facility will be an Ashok Leyland plant, rather than one belonging to Switch Mobility," Hinduja remarked. The majority of Ashok Leyland's international sales are derived from the GCC, the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation and Africa, including countries such as Chad, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and South Sudan.

Dheeraj Hinduja said, “Every time we have enhanced the capacity at Ras Al Khaimah, it has never been enough. From an international perspective, it will be the best year that Ashok Leyland has seen."

Recent reports indicate that the electric vehicle market in Africa is projected to be valued at USD 0.45 billion by 2025, with expectations to grow to USD 4.2 billion by 2030, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 56.3% from 2025 to 2030. The African countries involved in the EV market are Ethiopia, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa, Sudan and many more.
