Southern Ural State University is a center for educational, scientific, cultural, and athletic activities in the city and region of Chelyabinsk.
Founded in 1943 as the Chelyabinsk Institute of Mechanical Engineering, the university was reorganized into the Chelyabinsk Polytechnic in 1951, and in 1990 became the Chelyabinsk State Technical University. Since 1997, the university has been known as the Southern Ural State University. In 2010 it was granted the status of National Research University.
The university is ranked in the top 10 of 96 Russian universities, according to estimates compiled by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. It is also a member of the Alpha League of Russian Universities, which ranks first among all universities in the country.
Today, South Ural State University has 32 faculties and 142 departments located in Chelyabinsk, in addition to 2 branches in other cities. The structure of the university includes four intermediate vocational institutes, military education, and college preparatory faculties, two specialized faculties for professional development and skills development for university graduate specialists, the International Institute of Continuing Education, and the Institute of Open and Distance Education. The University has about 50 000 students in its branches (including full-time, part-time, and evening education).
The mission of SUSU is to develop and implement scientific knowledge and to produce a new generation of leaders capable of solving the problems of sustainable global development.
